Otsego’s Growth Spurs Infrastructure Enhancements and Community Initiatives

Otsego, Minnesota, continues to experience significant growth, prompting the city to implement various infrastructure enhancements and community initiatives to meet the evolving needs of its residents.

Population Growth and Housing Developments

As of 2022, Otsego’s population reached 22,705, with a median age of 33.7 and a median household income of $110,833. The city encompasses 30 square miles, offering ample space for residential, commercial, and industrial development. In 2025, 280 new home permits were issued, and in early 2026, applications for new residential housing developments, including Meadow Haven and Meridian Fields, were submitted, indicating continued growth.

Infrastructure Improvements

To support this growth, Otsego has undertaken several infrastructure projects:

Well House #4 Water Filtration Project

Completed in April 2026, the Well House #4 Water Treatment facility now features filtration devices to remove iron, manganese, and radium from the water supply. The project also includes a standby emergency generator, a backwash recovery system, and monitoring capabilities, enhancing drinking water quality and system resiliency.

Fire Department Development

In April 2026, the Otsego City Council appointed Jim McCoy as the city’s first official Fire Chief. McCoy, previously the Fire Chief for the City of Austin since 2014, will oversee the establishment of Otsego’s inaugural Fire and Emergency Service Station, slated to open by January 2027.

Community Engagement and Events

The city actively engages residents through various initiatives:

Prairie Park Phase 1 Implementation

Otsego is seeking community input for the design and planning of Phase 1 of the Prairie Park Master Plan. Residents can participate by attending events or responding to online questionnaires, with construction expected in spring and summer 2027.

Sanitary Sewer Maintenance

The Utilities Department is conducting its annual sanitary sewer mainline cleaning from May 18 through July 19, 2026, ensuring the continued efficiency of the city’s sewer system.

Kayak Rentals

Otsego Parks & Recreation now offers kayak rentals on the Mississippi River, providing residents with an opportunity to enjoy an 8-mile paddle adventure from Norin Landing Park to Carrick’s Landing Park.

These developments reflect Otsego’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and fostering community engagement as the city continues to grow.
