Otsego, Minnesota, has experienced significant growth in recent years, with the population increasing from approximately 6,800 residents in 2000 to over 22,000 today. This rapid expansion has necessitated substantial infrastructure developments to meet the community’s evolving needs.
New Water Treatment Facility
To ensure the provision of clean and safe drinking water, the city has constructed a third municipal water treatment plant. This facility is designed to remove iron, manganese, and radium from the water supply, enhancing overall water quality. The project also includes a standby emergency generator, a backwash recovery system, and advanced monitoring capabilities to improve efficiency and resilience. Funding for this initiative was secured through Environmental Protection Agency Community Grants, the Minnesota State Revolving Fund, and Minnesota Emerging Contaminants Grants, supplemented by water rates.
Establishment of Fire Department
In response to the growing population and the need for enhanced emergency services, Otsego has established its first-ever Fire and Emergency Service Station, located at 14499 75th Street NE. The city appointed Jim McCoy, formerly the fire chief for the City of Austin, as Otsego’s inaugural Fire Chief. The new fire station is expected to be operational by January 2027, aiming to provide timely and efficient emergency response services to the community.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The city continues to engage residents in planning and development initiatives. For instance, the design and planning for Phase 1 of the Prairie Park Master Plan are underway, with construction anticipated in spring and summer 2027. Community input is being sought to refine the concept, develop detailed designs, and gather feedback on playgrounds, a new pavilion with restrooms and concessions, and other upgrades.
These infrastructure enhancements reflect Otsego’s commitment to supporting its growing community by investing in essential services and facilities.
